Lateral Prayers

May 14, 2011by SteveNo Comments
pray

I’m going to keep this one short and sweet today (promise). As always, I have like a bajillion things I would like to share with you but time does not permit me to do so. Lindsay is hanging things in the new place and at risk of pictures of flowers and puppy dogs (the puppys are ok) going on every wall I should be supervising.

Here is an exercise that I began playing around with that targets the lateral core or in trainer speak anti-lateral flexion of the spine. I call them lateral prayers.

How to execute: With your hips at the end of a bench, hook your feet around the edges to prevent falling on your face.  Hang your torso off the end of the bench and keep your spine neutral and core tight as you extend and retract your hands overhead.

What it does: Just like a side plank on crack, it helps to train your core to prevent flexion of the spine.

Perform 2-3 sets of 3-8 reps depending on your badass level.  If you would like to upgrade, you could either hold small weights or wear a weighted vest.  Or if you are Ben Bruno you could wear 3 weightvests and hold 20lb dumbbells.  Kid is strong, just sayin’.
