I can’t stress enough how important a regular full-body dynamic warm-up is to include in not only your workout but your daily routine. So why is it that those who need this stuff the most almost always have an excuse for why it doesn’t get done yet they have plenty of time to do pec flys, half bicep curls and what I call the “chicken wing” shoulder fly. You know the guys who grab the 40lb. dumbbells and with their elbows flexed flap their wings.
Truly mind boggling.
I don’t care if your an 80 year old woman, an olympic athlete or just a weekend warrior trying to get fit you probably have some areas that could use a little mobility and activation prior to your workout. Yeah, this means you tough guy.
I’m not saying you have to be flexible enough to sniff your own ass but having a little hip mobility can save you from years of low back pain, bad knees and injury. I mean, your already at the gym doing things that you could probably do without so why not at least start with something that does a body good?
Here is a little taste of one of the dynamic warmups that I have my clients do on the regular. This will get you ready for strength training, dynamic circuits, kettlebells or even your cardio workout. I like to include exercises for mobility, stability and activation for the hips and shoulders to get you movin and groovin and prevent injury.
Soft tissue work and a solid warmup could quite possibly be the most important part of your workout ESPECIALLY if your a tough guy and lift things up and put them down.
Before I go for the weekend I wanted to share a clip from this season’s American Idol. This story choked me up as it displays one of the strongest muscles in the body. The human heart.
We all need that special someone in our lives that challenges us and motivates us to do better. I don’t know about you but I got a little choked up. Man I hope this kid wins.
